The community of Shirlington consists of several condo neighborhood areas of Fairlington, Wyndgate, Courtbridge, Heatherlea, and The Arlington. Claremont neighborhood is the section that has mostly single family homes.
It’s an area that was developed to embrace new urbanist principles – promoting environmentally friendly habits by creating walkable neighborhoods with plenty of adjacent retail and housing options.
Today the original Village of Shirlington that is the main retail and cozy enclave of shops off I-395 includes a Harris Teeter, an AMC movie theater with seven screens, a top-notch Arlington Public Library, a post office and the Signature Theatre as well as a number of storefronts that are not big business chain restaurants and boutiques like the area’s popular Busboys & Poets. Anyone up for a late night poetry slam? The Signature Theatre is non-profit professional theater company and serves to entertain and educate the community. There are theatre education programs for adults and children all year round. Shirlington is often referred to as Arlington’s Arts and Entertainment District and Signature Theatre is a big part of that label. In the summer, Fairlington Farmers Markets opens each Sunday at the Fairlington Community Center.
